Overbites occur when too much of the upper teeth overlap the lower front teeth. The upper teeth should be situated in front of the lower teeth so a certain amount of overbite is good. However, too much overbite could lead to an accelerated amount of wear on the top and bottom front teeth. Additionally, the inside of the person's lips and their gum line may be susceptible to injury and the lips may also become misshapen as it can force the mouth into a permanent puckered position.
Overbites tend to increase over time, so treatment at an early age is important. Braces are usually used to correct an overbite.
