FAQ’s About The Clear Decision
Will Invisalign® fit in my lifestyle?
Yes! Invisalign® will easily fit into your busy lifestyle and may, in fact, make many tasks easier and more enjoyable. Because Invisalign® aligners can be removed, eating and drinking is easier and less messy. Brushing and flossing is also considerably easier because there are no wires or brackets to work around. And, because Invisalign® is virtually invisible, chances are that no one will even notice that you are in the process of straightening your teeth!
How many patients are currently being treated with Invisalign®?
More than 1,000,000 patients worldwide have been or are currently being treated with Invisalign®. And, this number is growing every day!
Do the aligner trays require special care?
Your aligner trays do need to be cleaned just as you clean your teeth. Aligners should be brushed using a toothbrush and toothpaste twice a day, just like your teeth. This will keep them clean and free of odor or stains.
Once treatment is over, what will keep my teeth from moving again?
After your treatment is completed, your orthodontist will evaluate your needs. Some patients require a metal, conventional retainer while others might need a clear plastic retainer similar to the aligner trays. Every patient’s needs are different and outcomes vary.
I currently have braces. Can I switch to Invisalign?
Many orthodontists use a combination of traditional metal braces and Invisalign®. Consult with your orthodontist about the best treatment for you.
Does Invisalign® hurt?
Invisalign® is designed to move your teeth without the anxiety and pain of traditional metal braces. However, some people experience discomfort for the first few days of a new stage of treatment. This discomfort is temporary and normal and is also a sign that Invisalign® is working!
Can I just wear the aligner trays while I sleep?
No, it is very important that you wear the aligner trays at all times. Aligners can be removed to eat, drink, brush or floss but should otherwise be worn constantly to ensure that the teeth are moving at the correct pace and in the correct way. Failure to wear the aligners for 20-22 hours a day can cause the treatment to be ineffective.
Does Invisalign cause issues with speech?
Like other orthodontic treatments, Invisalign aligners may cause temporary speech issues. At the beginning of treatment, you may have a slight lisp. However, as the tongue gets used to the aligners in your mouth the lisp should disappear.
Are there restrictions on my diet?
No! Thanks to the removable nature of the aligner trays, patients are free to enjoy all foods and drinks.
Can I smoke and drink while wearing the aligners?
We discourage the use of tobacco products while wearing the aligner trays because it is possible for the aligners to become discolored. We also discourage the use of alcohol while wearing the aligners because of the high sugar content in alcohol. The aligner trays may trap the sugar between the teeth and cause serious dental issues. If you choose to drink any sugary drink, including alcohol, we recommend removing the aligner trays first and brushing your teeth before putting the trays back in your mouth.
